Scooter Brake & Fender Buyer's Guide

Every freestyle scooter ends up with one of two things on the back wheel: a brake or a fender. A few riders run neither, but that’s rare. Here’s how they differ and how to pick the right one.

Flex brake

A flex brake sits over the back wheel. Press it with your foot and it bends down onto the wheel to slow you down. When you let go, it springs back up.

  • Made of steel, nylon/plastic, or a mix of both. They give good stopping power and a solid feel under your foot.
  • Comes on almost every good complete. If your scooter still has an old spring brake, it’s probably time for an upgrade.
  • Best for: beginners, younger riders, and anyone riding park or cruising who wants to be able to stop.
  • Go easy on it. Stomping the brake locks the back wheel and wears a flat spot into it. Carve or drag a foot to slow down when you can, and save the brake for when you need it. Landing on the brake is also the #1 way to snap one. Why am I breaking so many parts?

Fender

A fender looks like a brake, but it doesn’t brake. Its side plates rest on the deck, so it doesn’t flex or move.

  • Stronger than a flex brake, so it holds up to big drops and grinds.
  • More room for your back foot, and you can use it for leverage on tricks.
  • Best for: street riders. Fenders are now the top choice for street, and they’re getting more popular in the park too.

Brake or fender: which one?

Just starting out? Go with a brake. Being able to slow down matters more than anything else at the start. Switch to a fender once you ride street and stop with your feet anyway.

Will it fit my deck?

  • The easiest option is the brake or fender made for your deck. Most brands sell their own replacement parts.
  • Universal brakes and fenders fit most decks that have mounting holes on the top of the deck.
  • No holes on top? It’s possible to drill the deck, but it’s a permanent change. Check that you’re comfortable with that first, and ask us if you’re not sure.
  • Keep the bolts tight. A loose brake or fender will rattle and can crack where it’s mounted.
